June 2021: The Modalities of Education

Amidst the public health emergency brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Philippine government ordered to ensure the delivery of basic education services to learners using all learning delivery modalities (LDM). These plans complement to the broader roles of parents, guardians and other household’s partners and members of the community to support the learning process of students at home.

In line with the government initiative, KnK Philippines employed all necessary learning opportunities to the children and in the community. Since the lockdown minors are not allowed to go outside, whereas, boredom and other unhealthy emotions might have affected their behavior. As such, the team conducted a holistic approach of learning activities that incorporate psychosocial support services as well.

A few months after the classes had opened last year, there are many issues on the modules provided and to cite an example, are the typographical errors and instructions written may confuse some learners.
In KnK “House for Youth” the children were assisted by our teachers during their modular and virtual classroom so that they could better understand the lessons. And for the children to cope with their studies, our teachers prepared and conducted some lessons related to their subjects. In addition, they also conducted an activity that showcases children’s musical talents impart with covid-19 awareness.

Meanwhile, in the Philippines community pantry emerged in different parts of the nation. These were organized by different private groups and individuals who wanted to help and contribute to the needs of the marginalized people with the written phrase on every community pantry of “take what you need, share what you can.
Similar to the community pantry, KnK Philippines continued to provide and offer access to quality education, which resulted in a mobile library or “Ikot Aklat” in the community. It started with just simple storytelling facilitated by the adult member in the family. The activity is designed to help children reading comprehension and further understand the lessons provided by their respective schools.

Face-to-face classroom sessions were conducted with only five (5) learners under Alternative Learning System following strict health safety protocols. All students are required to wear a mask, they must be sanitized prior to entering the community center and social distancing was observed.
